Today was the unveiling party for the Civitan Fine Arts group's Arizona Treasures mural at Orange Tree Resort. The mural was created to help the GSE members learn the professional and business side to being an artist. Painting the mural also helped expand the horizon for Civitan's Fine Arts group while providing an excellent opportunity for self expression and self discovery. To everyone at Orange Tree this mural gave a chance to show the true beauty of some of Arizona's most beloved places while providing another opportunity to work with a fellow non-profit organization. Everything from the Grand Canyon with it's Colorado River, desert wildlife, and the Monument Valley mountains with their unforgettable sunsets to the city side with Chase Fields Ball Park, the Light Rail, and Orange Tree's resort. The original ideas for the mural were created on a rendering to show Orange Tree our thoughts for the mural. After discussing with Orange Tree what to tweak the next step was getting someone to prepare the wall. It was re-stuccoed and given a wash of white paint so that the final design could be drawn out on the wall; first in pencil then darkened with black sharpie. We then gave a light wash of our background color. Next Anthony and Merilee created the sunset in the sky. Then using a variety of brush stroke techniques used with acrylic paints the group began painting the scene. After everything was painted in to our satisfaction we added finishing touches to it and signed the mural. This project took a few months in full to create and the end result was truly something remarkable. Civitan's Fine Arts group created this mural together. Our members Anthony, Jessica, Cody, Lynn, and Leah were guided and directed by our teacher Merilee.
To me this mural represents that people with special needs are equally capable of creating professional grade artwork expressing creative freedom as people without special needs. Many employees from Civitan Foundation were there along with members from the day program, the artists themselves with their teacher, and the team of employees and club members of Orange Tree. Creating this mural with our team was absolutely incredible and gave me a real sense of accomplishment. To others it represents a handful of reasons to love such an amazing state.
Joe and Polly shared their wedding pictures with the UK publication The Mirror in hopes of inspiring other people with disabilities to achieve their dreams, saying "the greatest thing is to love and to be loved in return." Polly also added "My advice to other couples, especially to young adults with special needs, is to live the dream, believe in yourselves and that anything can be possible."
I have always wanted to be independent so that I eventually can get married and start a family of my own. this is my ultimate dream. I never wanted to be an actress or be famous. I just want to have my own life and have my loved ones remember me after I am gone. I hope that I, as well as many other people with disabilities, have the opportunity to be as lucky as Joe and Polly someday. I think it is a dream that everyone has at some point in their lives, disability or not. Congratulations to the happy couple, and may you have a lifetime of happiness together! -Tori Click This year, during Xmas week(end), my sister and her husband flew in from Dallas, Texas, on Thursday night around 10:30. We spent the rest of the night catching up and sleeping, lol 'cause they were exhausted. Friday evening we all went to Church together, it was great, but something about it put me to sleep... LOL... Christmas Eve the rest of our family came over (i.e. grandparents, aunt, uncle cousins nephew/niece, stepbrother). We opened up a few bottles of wine and chardonnay and ate Christmas Eve dinner. we sat down to eat, and immediately my nephew, Trey, says he doesnt want to eat most of the good food. So, my little sister, Anna, and I figured out how to get the little boy (Trey) to eat his dinner, by mixing the foods he didn't like with some of the food he does like so that he can't taste what he don't like. Every year, on Christmas Eve, my family does both a white elephant gift exchange AND secret santa. So, after dinner we gathered around the living room and started the white elephant. Once that was over, I brought everybody into my room so I could give my grandma her Xmas gift, which was me playing my latest song on guitar. We began the secret santa exchange when we started passing around all the rest of the gifts. It's funny though, because I still don't know who drew my name for secret santa. But anyway, it was quite a good time. My favorite moment was giving my baby nephew, James, his very first Detroit Lions hat. Christmas morning finally arrived. This was the first Christmas since my older sister, Jessi, got married, and the first Christmas where she and I both woke up with aching bones, sore throats, and coughing… UGH!! But mine did not last long. Mom, Dad, Anna, Jessi (sisters), Brandon (Jessi's husband), and I gathered around the Christmas tree and took turns being "Santa" hot potato style… I started off by giving Anna a gift from me, which was a Harley Quinn t shirt. I don't remember the exact order we went in, so just bare with me here… I'm just gonna share what all I got for everybody… I handed a wrapped box to Brandon and Jessi. They unwrapped the box, to find that I had marked up the box with the word FRAGILE written in black sharpie. They busted open the box to find two coffee mugs with our favorite baseball team logo on it, the Texas Rangers. Next was my mom, who I got a blue t shirt that says "Smile More" on the front. Finally, I got my dad the movie "THE ITALIAN JOB". I'm not going to list off every little thing that I got, or this would go on and on forever… Plus I don't think anyone really cares that much… I wouldn't if I was the one reading this.. No. I'm just gonna keep this short and simple and just list off some of my favorites. #1. Playstation 4 with the games, Call of Duty Black Ops 3, and Uncharted 4, both of which I've already beaten, Black ops 3, I've beaten once, Uncharted 4, I've beaten twice. #2 TV/video game chair feat. surround sound with bluetooth abilities. #3. 2016 Metallica album #4. Deadpool blue ray dvd. Monday mourning I woke up with my foot in pain. I tried walking but I couldn't… I could still move it and stand on it, so it wasn't broken. I had sprained it. I couldn't figure out how I did it. I knew it'd happened in my sleep. But it wasn't till I returned to work on Wednesday, that I figured out what had happened. Apparently, I somehow managed to kick my bedpost really hard in my sleep. I couldn't walk normally at all until that Friday. Finally, Tuesday after Xmas, My dad, Brandon, Anna and I went to Best Buy and got me a new 40 inch TV to go with my new PS4, and my new TV chair. We got home, and we were all getting ready to go to the Coyotes vs Stars hockey game, when I realized that the arena would not allow me to bring my crutches in with me. And I could not limp on my foot for that amount of time. So, unfortunately, I had to cancel and stay behind. Luckily, I was able to give my ticket to one of Anna's friends that wanted to go. And i just watched the game on TV. I got the great pleasure of seeing the Dallas Stars destroy the Coyotes. And that was the last night of Christmas break. Which meant it was time to say goodbye to Jessi and Brandon, as they were flying back to Dallas early Wednesday mourning, before I woke up. And it was time for me to go back to work in the morning. In conclusion, it was an excellent Xmas vacation.here to edit.
..was the knowledge that I am loved by more people than I realized and for that I am VERY thankful."
By Lynn - Civitan Media Production Writer It started out a dreary day but when Santa and Mrs.Claus arrived cheers could be heard by Civitan members and staff. Pictures were taken by Cathy, a Civitan Media Productions employee and Media coordinator, Laura. Assistance was given to all by Kate, a job coach. Happiness could be heard as the lobby was turned into a place of abundant cheer as members of Civitan got to sit on Santa’s lap and have their photos taken. The free lunch that was served was the usual Christmas fare, stuffing, turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy.”It was good.” Cody B. said as he was finishing up the last of his turkey. “It is good.” Cathy said as she was eating the lunch that was prepared for her by the culinary department. When asked what Christmas meant to them most the those who were asked said family, but some had some humorous responses “Family and presents.” Diana said laughing. However, after a few long moments of contemplation, Candice, an employee of Civitan just wanted her student loans to be paid off, while Jeanne, another employee at Civitan said Christmas meant fruitcake. At the end of the day members who wished gathered in the “demo kitchen” and decorated cookies with the help of some amazing staff members while other members and staff looked on in amazement. Hi, my name is Leah and I'm a part of Civitan's DTA, Media GSE, Fine Art Group GSE, and Flerish Thrift Store GSE. I'd like to talk about my favorite family traditions for the holiday season. Because my family are both Jewish and Christian, I have favorite holiday traditions for both Hanukah and Christmas. One of my favorite Hanukah traditions was playing dreidel with my sister growing up. Dreidel is a game of luck or chance played during Hanukah. You spin a jewish spinning top called a dreidel that has a jewish letter written on each side and you play for chocolate coins called gelt. The letter you land on determines what to do that turn. When you land on נ(nun) you don't do anything and the driedel goes to the next person. When you land on ג(gimel) you win the pot of coins in the middle. When you land on ה(hey) you take half of the pot coins in the middle. When you land on ש(shin) you have to put one of your coins into the pot. The game ends when somebody lands on gimel and there are no more coins to play for. My other favorite Hanukah traditon is helping my mom and dad make latkes which are potato pancakes. They can be made with sweet potatoes or potatoes and are commonly topped with applesauce or sour cream. However, there are recipies for many different topping combinations if you want to get creative. When it comes to Christmas, there are a few family traditions that are my favorite parts of the holiday. My first favorite family tradition is my mom makes a christmas morning brunch of strada, nog, and fruit salad. It's absolutely the best way to start my christmas morning. Another favorite family Christmas tradition is helping to decorate the house. I always enjoy beautifying the Christmas tree with lots of ornaments and lights, putting up our christmas decorations around the house, and lighting a few holiday scented candles to bring it all together. My final favorite tradition when it comes to Christmas is helping the family bake the sweets. It brings us all together, smells amazing, and can be really entertaining to partake in making our favorite holiday sweets. These are my favorite holiday traditions because holidays are about celebrating with your family and friends, enjoying the company of your loved ones, enjoying amazing food, and partaking in your family's traditions; not receiving gifts. So get in the holiday spirit this season and enjoy the truly best parts of the winter season. What I am thankful for this year…
With Thanksgiving on the morrow, I thought I would take a few moments to blog about what I am thankful for. To keep it short and sweet, I am thankful for friends, family and for the changes that life is bringing me. Life is becoming exciting for me. Who couldn’t be more thankful for that?! Happy Thanksgiving! One might want to know what I am thankful for this time of year. Simply put, EVERYTHING. Why should I not? I am not going to complain about the way I walk because they are people who have no legs. I am not going to complain about wearing my glasses because, there are blind people in would love to see the world around them. And lastly I am VERY thankful to the Hornewer family, Crickett, Kyler and Steve....for caring about me, and trying to help me out in my time of need.
