Phoenix—if you looked up in the sky over Sweet Water Park on Wednesday January 21, you would have seen the art of Civitan on display.
Joining the propane gas inside the hot-air balloons was the pride and confidence of its creators.
Members took a break from the norm and enjoyed some fresh air. For 12 days, they prepared in art class: taping, gluing and getting together tissue paper. Balloons were black and silver, green, and altogether colorful. Six were launched before lunch and six in the afternoon.
After a countdown, the balloons were rocketed high into the sky. Long strings were attached to them and they stayed in the air for a minute or so. A few times the wind got ahold of the balloons, altering the flight. The enthusiasm did not blow away and the chillness of the day went away as the sun made its appearance, matching the warmth of the members and staff in the park.
“It was nice to have a little break and get out and get some fresh air,” Sandra said. “We never been to that park before. It was nice that it was close and convenient.”
Chips, turkey wraps and drinks were served at lunch. Laughter and fun were great sides.
The fun wasn't dampened by the wind. Even though one balloon was blown away and landed on a wall of an apartment complex, there were others that were propelled into the sky a few more times. Others stayed in the air as they were intended to and others didn't make it very far.
The members arrived at the park at 10:00 a.m. They walked over from the Village, which is not too far away. The break from “normal” activities was welcomed by most of the members, as they have enormously looked forward to spending some time with nature.
The balloons flying up in the sky reflected a mindset that most of the members had; that they too can fly. As the balloons rose, so did their confidence.
In many ways, the momentum that was grabbed out of that day came with a lesson of new beginnings and was the perfect way to encourage members to strive toward continuous flying in 2015.
