The Saturday Social Club spent the day out in the gorgeous Arizona weather. We enjoyed a 2.5 mile hike at Papago Park. After our hike we had a picnic at the park. The day was absolutely perfect.

This night was all about the competing to make the best dish with the secret ingredients. We started out in three teams and each team was assigned a dinner course to prepare. The main course team made delicious tacos. The side dish team prepared with their secret ingredients a phenomenal black bean and rice side dish. Lastly, was the dessert team and they made a scrumptious strawberries and cream layer cake. The teams then tasted each other’s meal and determined a winner. The winner of the first Civitan Chopped Challenge was Team A- Tacos.
We began our night having dinner. We then set up our chairs at the electric light parade and boy was it packed. We had a blast watching all the colorful floats go by. We ended our night with some ice cream and Christmas music.
Civitan HCBS sure knows how to make the weekend memorable! These last two weekends have been filled with fun memories and events.
On Friday we got our creative juices flowing. We made Thanksgiving centerpieces and enjoyed fajitas prepared by our very own culinary program. We spent Saturday attending the Chandler Chuck Wagon Cook-Off. The day was filled with learning the skills to rope, visiting the Chandler Train Museum, watching dutch oven cooking demonstrations and riding in a wagon from the olden days. Two weekends ago, we spent Friday evening playing a few rounds of UNO and Operation. We also had a delicious dinner at Boston Market. The next day we had a great time at Wild West Days in Cave creek. Group enjoyed a wonderful parade and a gun fight performance done by Prescott Regulators. October 29- Dinner and Costume Dance Creepy clowns, an Ice Queen, and television icons were just a few of the guests we had at our costume dance. We had a great time dancing to all the top hits as well as a few Halloween classics thrown in. Our pictures came out extra spooky with the addition of our monster photo booth props and we all enjoyed drinking our vampire’s blood party punch. Our night was complete with a pizza party dinner and eerie “worms in dirt” dessert. October 28- Dinner and Crafts
Our craft night began with a fall leaf painting session using liquid watercolors in festive autumn shades. We enjoyed a dinner of cheeseburgers and macaroni with jello for dessert. After eating, we went back into the art room to cut out our leaves. Using Mod Podge, we covered our glass vases making a beautiful centerpiece perfect for any Thanksgiving table. Our night was filled with challenging games and friendly competition. We began our night outside enjoying the cooler fall weather while playing pumpkin seed pick up and having a ring toss competition. We had delicious French dip sandwiches, tomato and cucumber salad, and macaroni during our family style dinner while conversing about the next games we were going to play. We concluded our evening in the multipurpose room running a hilarious mini pumpkin relay, bowling, and dressing our staff up as toilet paper mummies. He says his disability often prevents him from working or discourages him from trying to find a job. Until now. With the grand opening of Flerish, Design + Resale, many intellectually disabled people such as Robert can put their anxieties about working aside. The 3,000 square-foot store, which plans to open up for business November 2nd, will be ran by Civitan Foundation, a local non-profit that strives to improve the lives of special-needs adults. The employees of the store will be Civitan members with jobs such as sales associate, cashier, receiving, and janitorial; all jobs that most members have been aiming for, for many years. “I don’t care what I do,” Robert said. “I’ll be happy with sweeping floors, stacking things or what [have you]. I will just be glad to work.” The store will sell items as varied as furniture, clothing, and jewelry. It will also showcase, and make available for purchase, fine art canvases created by Civitan’s members, which have been featured at art shows around the state. The store is located at 12621-12625 N. Crave Creak Road in Phoenix, just north of Cactus Road. Civitan also runs a thrift store in Williams Arizona, with the Phoenix store focusing on more fashionable items. Civitan is now accepting inventory donations for the store. In addition, they are looking for applicants to help coach employees during their shifts. There will be one job coach needed for every two employees. There are an expected 50 shifts to be available, allowing for immense opportunity. Dawn Trapp, Executive Director of Civitan, is excited to expand the non-profit’s footprint in the valley and looks forward to strengthening the connection with the community. “We try hard to encourage special-needs employment,” Trapp said. “We are proud to continue to provide opportunities for these wonderful and capable adults.” Flerish Design + Resale is the most recent employment opportunity that Civitan has started. The non-profit also employs members in its Cookery program and has partnerships with various businesses around the Valley. Civitan also employs members in its’ media center, which designed the logos and website for the new store. The Store is currently open for you to come shop and/or drop off donations
12621-12625 N. CAVE CREEK RD. PHOENIX, ARIZONA 85022 602.358.8677 When William L was handed the melted piece of chocolate he knew right away what to do with it. He wanted to make a chocolate pizza. "It was cool to make pizza out of chocolate. It was good. I put white chocolate inside of my piece." William L was a part of a group of Civitan members who recently toured the Cerreta Candy Factory in Glendale Arizona. The factory, which is family owned, took members on an exciting tour that displayed various types of candy. The members had a sugar high off anticipation. Different groups of Civitan members toured the factory at different times, but they all left with the same taste of satisfaction. The tour lasted 30 minutes and featured exhibits that showed members how Cerreta makes its candy. Attractions along the tour included a demonstration on how caramel becomes wrapped into a delicious treat and a showing on how Cerretainputs its sweet, creamy fillings that make up the center of a chocolate offering. But the thing that stood out the most for members was the enormous Santa Clause. Although it wasn't Christmas time, it was a true gift for them to see. The Santa was made out of pure chocolate. It was 600 pounds and cost $6,000. When members saw it, they were in awe. "Wow!" Alex said. "Wow!" When the tour was complete, members all walked out with a souvenir. They all got to make their own candy. It was a sweet escape from the normal schedule that the members have. Most members ate their candy right away, but William wanted to savor it. "It is still in my freezer," he said. "I want to make it last." |
