PHOENIX—On April 7, 2015, people will have the opportunity to donate to an organization that provides more than just services to members of the special-needs community.
Upon entering Civitan Foundation’s newest facility, Civitan Village, one might be thrown off. The Vibe radiating from this cozy north Phoenix hub comes off as something other than “just another” non-profit hosting space.
A visitor is immediately greeted by program participants earning a real wage by answering phones and e-mails all while running the front reception area. Next, you cannot help but peek into the large window to view the workings of the busy media center, which is home to a bubbling graphic design and public relations business. One can experience the true features of multiple computers, a giant monitor, sound board and participants hard at work. Exiting the media center, you’ll for sure encounter the many scrumptious scents coming from the Cook-er-y, which is home to a successful catering business. There, you’ll observe participants cooking, learning about food safety, or planning meals. Making your way around and down the hallway, your eye will certainly catch a glimpse of the colorful and unique creations that have had the honor of being displayed in local art shows. Last, but not least, you will end up at Civitan’s Creative Center where you might get a chance to see a live stage performance, maybe some participants holding a yoga pose, or simply learning about healthier ways of living.
“We have a very unique day program that is setting the bar for future programming.” CEO Dawn Trapp said. ‘We would love to grow our micro-businesses in the culinary field and media production, creating more jobs for our program participants.”
According to recent United States Government calculations, 70 percent of people with disabilities are unemployed. Civitan’s commitment to providing opportunities for employment helps conquer that statistic and delivers solid conformation to its members that they are more than just a person with a unique ability.
Civitan is participating in Arizona Gives Day, a 24-hour giving campaign that encourages groups and individuals to donate to non-profits across Arizona. Like other non-profits, Civitan relies on donations and grants. But unlike many non-profits, Civitan’s flare and ambition stretches past the mundane.
Along with its daytime programming, Civitan offers its flagship camp at its 15-acre facility in Williams. The camps, which are week-long during the summer months and on weekends throughout the rest of the year, are filled with activities ranging from music creation and learning, to participation in the town’s festivals. Overall, 750 families and individuals benefit from Civitan’s services.
Discovering that covering President Obama’s visit to Central High school, operating an online radio station, preparing and delivering food to low-income youth and selling art at art shows are just a snippet of Civitan’s accomplishments. You will leave the Village realizing special deeds, not special needs are the hallmark HERE.
Donations before April 7 are more than welcome. Anyone who donates $50 or more will receive a Civitan bracelet. For more information and to donate, visit: https://azgives.givebig.org/c/GivesDay/a/civitanfoundationaz
